I thank all who helped me with Register. There are those who sent me data on their forebears and friends, several who reported on themselves, and there are those without whom the project could never have been started or completed.
Rita Rochelle is one of these. Her incomparable sense of history, of family, and of Ireland is responsible for much of the information. Rita provided the names and addresses for our requests for information. She provided me shelter while I toiled on naturalization records in Casper.
Ardelle (Swaim) Martin is another. She is my oldest friend, a classmate in kindergarten and beyond. She was unable to contribute an ancestor to the list, though there is Irish blood in her veins. Ardelle prepared the mailing of the information requests, assisted me greatly in working the bugs out of the Register computer program, and installed the program for my 'Beta' testers in Casper. She also helped me with editing.
I am grateful to these two ladies for their encouragement, and am most happy that they are my friends.
Vincent O'Farrell is the owner of the Eldon Hotel in Skibbereen. It was he who introduced me to Postal Directory of Munster, Northside of the Mizzen, and The Coast of West Cork. I wish also to thank him and his family for their splendid hospitality. The other premier hotel in Skibbereen is the West Cork. I thank John Murphy and his family for their hospitality.
Peggy Tobin (Mrs. Steve) sent me, from her home in Texas, names she gathered from naturalization rolls in Natrona County Court House. The list provided 148 names, and inspired me to examine the records completely.
I am grateful to the staff of the Natrona County District Court, keepers of immigration records, for their help and kindness.
It was during this project that I met Joe Burke for the first time. Joe knows and knew everyone. He knew those from town and country; He knew those who came to town but once a year. He provided nearly 60 names with stories, and added flesh and blood to those that previously had been only names. He is the source of the nickname collection.
The nickname collection was suggested by Jo Anne Daly Kolasinski.
I have programmed computers for over forty years, but when a new dialect of an old, familiar computer language had me down for the count, my son, Brian, got me on my feet again. His wife, Kathy (Greenan), led me through the arcane rituals of word processing. Aren't computers supposed to make things easier?
I am greatly pleased by the beautiful photograph and Celtic art that grace the book cover.
The Celtic designs are by Cari Buziak. You can see more of her work at her web site http://www.aon-celtic.com.
The photo of Dunmanus Bay is by Bob Walsh. His wife Mary has a lovely garden on the shore. You can see the garden and more of Bob's photography on their web site http://www.aseasidegarden.net. When you visit Sheepshead, don't miss the garden.
Second Edition Acknowledgements
Roberta Mahoney searched Ellis Island records for names from Register. When she found a name, she examined the passenger manifest. In many cases there were other passengers going to Casper who were not already listed. In other cases the immigrant's sponsor was not previously listed. Her work added most of the names added in the second edition. For many already in the list, her work added new information such as sponsor, name of ship, and the name of a parent. I am amazed at her energy, discipline, and enthusiasm.
Brigid Schulte is the granddaughter of Frank Ellis and Brigid (Nunan) Ellis, and the daughter of Art Schulte and Ruth Ellis. She is a writer for the Washington Post. Before her uncles Frank and T.J. Ellis sold their sheep ranch, she accompanied them on their last sheep drive. She wrote a warm, informative description of the drive. She has graciously permitted me to reproduce it here.
