The names were gathered from the Social Security Death Index by Margie Ellis, granddaughter of John Ellis (177). She chose Natrona, Wyoming (Last Residence) as filters to eliminate all other records. This search yielded names of known immigrants, of immigrants not previously listed, and of non-immigrants. The search misses those who died elsewhere and those who never applied for an SS number. SSDI in most cases reports only the month of death. Margie and I have made judgments about which names should be included in this tabulation. Some criteria: * Birthdate should be consistent with the period of peak immigration. * Christian name should be consistent with Irish usage. Some of those listed here may not be Irish immigrants. Those for whom IDs have been entered are in Register. For those who may, be in Register, an ID number appears in the Remarks entry. Others may or may not be Irish immigrants. (The State entry has no use at this time since Wyoming was a search filter.) [Why is this website called reenacoppal? GeoCities (Yahoo) provides me with a free website. I tried other names that would have been closer to the book's topic, but all were taken.] (I must compete for the name among GeoCities sites and Yahoo email names.) In the end I chose my mother's townland (Ree [or Ri] = king, na = of the, coppal = horses). I have been informed that " . . . it is comprised of 185 acres, 3 roods, and 33 perches and is in the parish of Kilcrohane and the old Poor Law Union of Bantry (its workhouse was in Bantry). Its figures for the 1851 census can be found on its page 144, Vol. II, Part I." The acreage is from INDEX to the TOWNLANDS, AND TOWNS, PARISHES AND BARONIES OF IRELAND. 1851. My friend who reported the size of Reenacoppal went on to say: " . . . in Irish Statute measurement there are 5.5 yards sq. per perch, 40 perches per rood and 4 roods per acre. "But when the English came to Ireland and began doling out Irish land to themselves, they generously created for themselves what they called Irish land measurement which is the same except that the perch is 7 yards sq. so there are 1.62 Statute acres in an Irish acre. Both systems were in use in 1953 when I left Ireland." Let's do the math for the original Irish measures: (5.5*3)*(5.5*3) = 272.25 sq ft to 1 perch 4*40 = 160 perches to an acre 160*272.25 = 43560 sq ft in acre. According to Merriam Webster in the American and English acres there are 43560 square feet. Let's do the math for the Engish rewrite: (7*3)*(7*3) = 441 sq ft to 1 perch 4*40 = 160 perches to an acre 160*441 = 70560 sq ft in acre and 70560/43560 = 1.62 Irish/American/English acres in what the English call the Irish acre. I knew a boy who was required to practice the piano an hour a day. He played the day's assignment very slowly and timed it. Then he calculated the number of times he could play it in an hour at that speed. Then he played the tune that number of times at top speed. He was done in 15 minutes. I can't help thinking of him when I think of English weights and measures. Now lets take a look at the size of Reenacoppal again: 185 acres, 3 roods, and 33 perches. 3 roods = 0.75 acres 33 perches = 33/(4*40) = 0.20625 acres Reenacoppal is (185 + 0.75 + 0.20625) acres or 185.95625 acres. There's something to be said for the decimal system's simplicity, but it's hard to beat the charm of roods and perches. That may be 1.62*185.95625 = 301.249125 gold standard acres. I have posted the original SSDI printouts on the website that supports the book at www.geocities.com/anrai_mcward There you can see them as www.geocities.com/anrai_mcward/Xxxx.jpg where Xxxx is one of: Barry Bowen Buckley Daly Donovan Ellis Mahoney MahoneyRawlins Sullivan Tobin Ward The uppercase letters are obligatory (Notice 2 in MahoneyRawlins). Other names are included, and most are in alphabetic order. The exception is Doherty (with Buckley). Harry Arundel Ward 10 Dec 2004
