George Anderson

George was born 4-1-1894 at Number 8 Ravendale in Belfast, County Down, the third son of George Anderson (b1861) of Saintfield, County Down and Mary Martha Pettigrew (b1861). The family eventually included 6 boys and 4 girls.

George (1861) was one of 10 children of Samuel Anderson (b1825) and Isabella Connolly (b1841) of Saintfield. Samuel was the son of James Anderson (1790) of Carsonstown, County Down.

In the early 1900s, George's brothers, Samuel and Robert, left

Ireland for America. Robert settled in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Samuel in Glendo, Wyoming.

George boarded Campania in Liverpool and arrived in New York 9-10-1912. He joined Samuel in Glendo. He worked on a cattle ranch, married Cora Evelyn Sheldon (born in South Dakota). They homesteaded. George became a citizen in 1919. George and Cora had 4 children: William George (b1915), Robert Wilford (b1920), Helen Dorothy (b1921) all born in Glendo, and Albert David (b1923) in Casper.

In 1923 George and Cora moved the family and their belongings to Casper in a Model T Ford. The trip took 11 hours. It would have been quicker, but George had to back up the hills so that gasoline would flow to the carburetor.

George played on a soccer team. The players were skilled, and games were well attended.

(An aside: Steve Tobin and Murdoch McPhearson played 'football'. The game must have been soccer.)

George worked at the Texaco refinery. He died in 1936 of burns suffered in an explosion at the refinery. He was only 42.

Samuel David Anderson

Samuel was born 7-2-1892 in Belfast, Ireland, to George Anderson and Mary Martha (Pettigrew) Anderson. He was a brother of George Anderson (382). He lived in Glendo.

Michael Joseph 'Mickey' Burke II

Michael was one of 8 children born to Michael Joseph Burke and Catherine Cronin. Their farm was between Ahakista and Durrus on the Sheepshead Peninsula. They also owned a shop. (An aside: In 'Ahakista' the 'h' is silent, and the 's' has an 'sh' sound -- a lovely word.) 6 of the 8 came to USA, and 3 to Casper. Those 3 were: Michael, Patsy, and Hannah (Burke) Dean.

Catherine Cronin, Mickey's mother, was a sister of Hanora Cronin, the mother of Jack, Steve, and Con Sullivan, Molly (Sullivan) O'Connor, and Nora (Sullivan) Buckley.

Mickey attended school next to the Ahakista church.

Mickey was 22 when he arrived in Casper (AIL13). He worked for his distant cousin, Pat Sullivan (100), but by 1906 had his own sheep ranch, with Pat Sullivan as a minority partner.

Mickey and his brother, Patsy (39), married sisters, Anna and Della McKenna. Anna and Mickey, married 6-13-1914, had 5 children: Frank, Joe, twins John and Kathleen (died at age 4), and Bill.

Anna died in 1929, and Patsy died in 1924. Mickey and Patsy's wife, Della, married in 1936. Della died two years later. Mickey raised his children and Mary Theresa (Burke) Klink and James Michael Burke, S.J., children of Patsy and Della.

Mickey died 5-10-1967 at age 88.

Two Burke stories exemplify the difficulties of the sheep business. In 1919 there was a severe drought. Mickey shipped his starving herd in two trains to Sweetwater, Texas for winter grazing, and brought them back to Casper in May 1920. Mickey traveled ahead to find land to graze the sheep. Tim Bohane and Paddy Daly traveled with the sheep, the horses, and the wagons. They slept, along with the dogs, in the wagons. Poison plants killed some sheep. On their return trip, sheep were lost in snow storms. No money was made that year, but the sheep were saved. Other owners also transported their sheep to warmer states.

In the Blizzard of 1949, a convoy of trucks and bulldozers brought feed to the sheep. On their return trip they rescued Mary Jo (Sirridge) Burke, wife of Mickey's son, Michael Joseph (Joe), who was expecting the birth of their daughter, Eileen.

Don shared a poem by John that speaks of his 54 years as a herder, starting as a young boy. He tells of the cold and of the long hard days and nights, of loneliness, of defending the sheep against the coyotes. He speaks of his desire to leave Wyoming and return to Ireland, but as he comes to the end of his days he tells us that he'll ask God to let him return to the life of a herder in Wyoming.

She left her father Bern-- McGeehan, 5 Killarney St., Dublin. She left Londonderry (called Derry today) on Columbia, and arrived in NYC 12-18-1912. Her original destination was Laramie, Wyoming where her sponsor was her uncle, Edward Doherty. He lived at 1010 S. 5th St.

John Daly

John came to Casper at age 22 in 1897. He worked until 1900 as a herder for his cousin, Black Tim Daly. The herd grazed from Teapot Dome to the head of the Cheyenne River.

John started a ranch with his brothers on Casper Creek. The partnership continued until 1937. The company continued as John Daly Sheep Company.

John and Laura married 10-3-1901. She was the sister of Black Tim Daly's wife. The next spring a bad storm hit during shearing at the Platte River Bridge next to the Standard Oil Refinery. Most of the sheep died, but the family persevered.

In the early days John would stay with the sheep six weeks at a time. Later when he had a car, he commuted daily to the ranch.

John was one of the original investors in Wyoming National Bank, and owned the Daly Building on South Center St.

John ran the ranch until his death October 1938.

John and Laura raised 6 children: Joseph, Francis, Mildred, Gerald, Bernard (Bud), and Evelyn.

Jo (Mahoney) Daly

Jo worked for a year in a department store in Hartford, Connecticut, starting in 1919. She married Denis Daly (13) in Casper in 1920. She was known to one and all as Aunt Jo.

Harry Ward recalls how much his parents and he enjoyed her company. She was known for her wit and her stories. In one, Denis comes home hungry from the ranch to an empty house, finds a bowl of lovely meat in the refrigerator, and cooks a meal for himself. Days later he learned that he had eaten the dog's dinner.

In 1968 in Waterford with her granddaughter, Honora Whittaker, she found that they had entered the men's room: Jo blessed herself.

She had three sisters and a brother in Casper: Mary (Mahoney) Kelliher, Nora (Mahoney) Hayes, Ella (Mahoney) Sullivan, and Flory Mahoney.

Marcus Daly

Subtract 1 from the total number of Irish settlers in Casper. Marcus Daly may never have been to Casper, but his story is an important one so I tell it here. He came to USA as a penniless boy from Cavan, became very wealthy and influential mining copper in Butte Montana. He brought many Irish to Butte, and sent many Irish to Casper at the time of an oil boom (which may have coincided with a slack period in Butte).

I had misinterpreted Phillip J. McCauley's 1964 Tribune article, thinking that it said that he had come to Casper and so put him here rather than in History. The name, Marcus, stayed in the back of my mind, however; in July 2001 I was reading an article on mining in the March 2000 National Geographic, and his name leapt off the page. Now I'm able to set the record straight.

This list contains a number of Casperites who went first to Montana: James and Nora Bonner, two Doherty families, Onney J. Dever, Con Sweeney, Hugh and Rose Meenan, and John Doran, who worked for Daly as a cook. Many of these, were from Donegal.

Derrylea is near Ballyjamesduff, a town made famous by Percy French's line, Come ye back, Paddy Reilly, to Ballyjamesduff.

Former Casperite, Miriam Poe Ryan, moved to Hamilton, Montana where the Marcus Daly mansion is located. She was fascinated by his story, and wrote an historical novel, Riverside, about him. There is information about him in books and on the internet.

According to an internet article (www.DalyMansion.org) he 'was stocky and had a dark complexion and the usual Irish temperament' (emphasis mine).

Note: I called this 'unPC' to the attention of the people at DalyMansion.org. They were shocked, and promised to make appropriate changes -- Nice People!

The Casper Star-Tribune article (1001) tells us, incorrectly, that he was born in Cork.

Teresa Frances (Arundel) Daly

Teresa lived in Rochester, NY when she first immigrated. There she worked in a shoe factory.

Teresa and Tim (46) lived at 742 S. Beech St. They had two sons, Arnold (born 5-11-1915) and Timothy (born 2-15-1924). Two Tim's in the family weren't enough. Arnold was called Tim. Pat Lavery, manager of Pay-N-Takit and Arnold's boss, gave Arnold a name that he thought would be easier for Safeway customers.

Arnold flew transport planes during WWII, and from 1945, for five years, was a Special Air Mission Pilot flying, among others, George C. Marshall, Henry Wallace, and Margaret Chase Smith. Tim flew fighter planes (P-38, P-39, P-40, P-63). Tim died June, 1976.

Teresa had a sister Margaret (106) who lived in Denver and for a short time in Casper. Teresa and Margaret were first cousins of Margaret Arundel Ward (1).

Teresa died 12-25-1962.

Timothy Daly

Tim was born into a family of 6 boys and 3 girls. 3 of his brothers served in the Britsh army in Ireland. They were killed in WW I in France.

He earned his first pay at age 10 -- two shillings for 2 months of milking.

When he came to America in 1918, he needed 10 pounds 'landing money' (in 1947 landing money for Mike Sullivan -- see History -- was $2000). His cousin, Dick Tobin, sent him that and passage money. He worked for Dick for $95 per month to pay his debt. Other ranchers that he worked for include Mickey Burke, Bill Swanton, and Con Conners. He sent money home to his mother.

Tim, as a non-specialist, could shear 20 to 30 sheep per day using steam shears. Professionals could do many more. (Joe Burke reports that a top shearer could shear 250 sheep a day using manual, electric, or steam shears. At one time, the sheep were shorn too close and were in danger from the cold. The shearing season starts in mid-May.)

In 1919 Tim was joined by his brother Jim (305).

Tim's story was told by Tim to Hester Dowler in1983 at Poplar Living Center.

Timothy F. Daly

Declaration of Intention (to become citizen) 1905

Timothy T. Daly

Tim worked as a stevedore on the New York City docks when he first immigrated. When he moved west to Casper, he worked in the sheep business. After a time he was the owner of two herds (1500 head per herd). His brother, James, was a partner when Tim went to work for Standard Oil. Tim later left the refinery and ran the sheep ranch on his own.

His winter grazing ground was northeast of Midwest. For the summer he trailed the sheep some 70 miles to greener pastures in the Big Horn Mountains. An 80 mile cattle trek is reported as a 8-day trip in Casper Centennial (p263, F310). Joe Burke reports trailing sheep 80-85 miles in 10 days. Traffic jams and storms sometimes slowed the trek.

The mountain camp was beautiful. Lots of lush green grass, clear streams, and high stone cliffs, a temptation for the children when there was time for play. And for all the sheepmen in the Big Horns, there was a store, Cunningham's, on the south bank of the North Fork of Powder River.

Tim's elder son, Arnold (called Tim though his father and brother were christened Tim -- Pat Lavery of the old Pay-N-Takit chose names for his employees, as would a Hollywood producer, to please their audience) remembers the shearing at the Thirty-three Mile Shearing Pens. He watched the shearers and those who stuffed and stomped the shorn fleece into huge bags, fifteen feet long by 4 feet in diameter.

Timothy T. Daly . . .

In the fall, the fattened lambs were trailed back, from the mountains to the 'Flats', to a rail head where they were weighed (price per pound had been previously negotiated), placed in rail cars, and sent off to market in Chicago. The train stopped on the way to Chicago so the sheep could be given a drink. Lone Pine, Nebraska was one of these watering holes.

Arnold learned to pack a sheep wagon, harness a team of horses, and cook on a wood stove. He remembers the Orange Red Buttes near Phil Mahoney's Buffalo Creek Ranch just west of the Hole in the Wall Country.

He remembers Tom Ward who always rode with a six gun on his hip. Arnold has no idea what use Tom had in mind for the gun, but is certain he harmed no one.

The Henning Hotel was a great gathering place. Arnold enjoyed going there with his dad and hearing the talk of wool buyers from Boston and sheepmen. And with Billy Henning in mind, Arnold could not suppress his memories of Billy's 1922 Rolls and a twelve cylinder Stutz (with leather covered fenders!) owned by Harry H, Schwartz.

Tim died in 1959.

Timothy, James, and Jeremiah were brothers.

Elizabeth (Harte) Doherty

Elizabeth left Easter Sunday 1908 at age 16 to live with cousins in New York City. She trained as a nurse at the Babies Hospital there. She worked as a children's nurse for a wealthy family.

Elizabeth and James raised five children: Mary Elizabeth Rhodes, Brigid (Nancy) McIntosh, Patricia Cook, Cecilia Gray, Daniel Doherty (RIP).

Elizabeth died at age 96.

Elizabeth's birthplace, Ballinamuck, Longford, was the scene of the final battle of a rising against the British led by Wolfe Tone and his French allies. Their initial success ended in Ballinamuck. The British imprisoned the French and slaughtered the Irish. The story is told in Thomas Flanagan's beautiful novel, The Year of the French.. 'Muck' is Irish for pig. The pig association comes from an ancient Irish epic tale. In Flanagan's novel, one of the British asks another, who is insulted that the first would think that he could understand Irish, the meaning of Ballinamuck. The meaning is not revealed.

Two years earlier Wolfe Tone had brought another French invasion fleet, this time to Bantry Bay (the origin of most Casper immigrants). Unfavorable winds prevented a landing. The British were warned by the owner of Bantry House. He gained a new title for his work.

Before she met Frank, Brigid, a member of Cuman na mBan, was a secret courier in the 1916-20 rising against the British. Two of her brothers were officers in "Flying Columns', guerrilla units that struck the British and disappeared. There was no other way for the Irish to fight against the vastly stronger British war machine. Both brothers were caught and imprisoned; one was exiled to Australia, never to return.

Frank served in the US Army at Fort Lewis in Washington in World War I, where he was naturalized 10-14-1918. Like other Ellis brothers, Frank homesteaded and ranched. The depression closed out all but Mike, Jack, and Frank. (Homesteading came to an end in 1934.)

He owned the Casper Buffet on the east side of the 200 block of South Center St. Later he was a state liquor inspector, covering Casper, Cheyenne, Rock Springs, and Rawlins. He had oil leases, but his timing was bad. Oil was discovered after he had released the leases.

Nora (Mahoney) Hayes

Mary (Kelliher), Nora (Hayes), Ella (Sullivan), Jo (Daly), and Flory Mahoney are children of James Mahoney. James took refuge in Casper in 1918 after a patriotic scrape in Ireland. He was soon able to return to Ireland but these of his children immigrated to Casper. James is a brother of John Mahoney of Rawlins who came west with the US Army in 1877. Nora was a child of Frank's first marriage.

Nora left Ireland at age 16 for New York City. She was able to pay her passage with a 50 pound inheritance from G. F. Curley Murray. She worked at a Schraft's Restaurant. She left for Casper about 1907.

Her brother, Jer, settled in Rawlins. Her sister, Julia, and brothers, James and John, stayed in Ireland.

She always baked a cake for Harry Ward for his birthday.

Nora died January, 1957.

Annie Maria (Horn) Heagney

See Peter Heagney (399). Annie Maria may have had no connection to Casper. Peter's connection to Casper was slight, at least according to my source.

Peter Heagney

Peter and Anna Maria (Horn) Heagney (400) were discovered in the book Women of Wyoming by Mrs. Alfred H. (Cora M.) Beach (Casper 1927). Their connection to Casper is not made clear, beyond Peter's association with Fort Casper. Denis Minihan had a friend whose father was Peter Heagney. Denis's friend may have been a grandson or great grandson of Peter and Anna Maria. (Remember, this list excludes no one.) The name John F. Heagney appears as Clerk of District Court on Pat Sullivan's 1893 naturalization certificate.

Peter lived in Illinois with a brother, and served in the Union Army in an Illinois unit. He was discharged in 1865. He lived in Julesburg and Denver, Colorado. He worked as a teamster in the construction of Fort Caspar. In 1867 he was in Cheyenne following his trade, learned in Ireland, as a boot and shoe maker.

In 1868 he sent for Annie, his childhood sweetheart. Annie visited friends in New York on the way to Cheyenne. They married there with Father Kelly as witness. Later they moved to Rawlins. Their children (no Peter among them) were born in Cheyenne and Rawlins.

Annie died 8-15-1883, her 15th wedding anniversary. She is buried in Rawlins.

Mary (Mahoney) Kelliher

Mary Mahoney was born May 11, l892 (1894 per Declaration of Intent) in Ahileague, Kilchrohane, Bantry, County Cork, Ireland.*

Mary arrived in the U. S. in her early teens and lived for a short time with an aunt, Cecilia McSweeney, in Hartford, Connecticut. Mary was compassionate and ambitious, and so chose the nursing profession, earning a license as a registered nurse, She graduated from Cook County Hospital in Chicago in 1919. At that time, it was unusual for a woman to pursue a career because a woman's role was defined, to a great extent, as domestic in nature. After child-rearing years, she returned to nursing and was employed at Casper Memorial Hospital as an R.N. for the next 20 years.

Mary died May 4, l992, just a week short of 100 years.

There were four daughters born to Maurice and Mary, all educated in St. Anthony parochial school and Natrona County High School: Rita Rochelle, Rosaleen Webster, Mary Kelliher BVM, and Patricia Tripeny.

Flory Mahoney and four sisters, Mary (Kelliher), Nora (Hayes), Ella (Sullivan), Jo (Daly) are children of James Mahoney (65). James took refuge in Casper in 1918 after a patriotic scrape in Ireland. He was soon able to return to Ireland but these of his children immigrated to Casper. James is a brother of John Mahoney of Rawlins who came west with the US Army in 1877.

She lived at 337 S. Beech at the time of her Declaration of Intent 7-25-1918.

*An editorial aside: Mary's address is typical of Irish rural addresses. First a townland, then a town, then a city, and then the county.

Maurice Kelliher

Maurice Kelliher arrived in New York City in his early teens to live with older sisters and brothers who were established there. Maurice was employed for seven years as a switchman and engineer on the electric interurban transit lines. The lore of adventure called him to travel by train to the West, and he was one of few Kerrymen who came to Casper to join the majority of Cork natives.

For a short time, he was employed by Standard Oil Company. World War I was in full force and Maurice proudly served in the Corps of Engineers. Upon discharge, he married Mary Mahoney in New York City in 1919 and they returned to Casper to make their home where Mary had three sisters and a brother: Ella Sullivan, Nora Hayes, Jo Daly, and Flory Mahoney all from Kilcrohane. Maurice joined the Casper Fire Department in 1921. He served as Chief from l938 to retirement in 1949.

Maurice was active in civic and church affairs, serving as Grand Knight and State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, as well as being a Fourth Degree Knight. He served as post commander of the George W. Vroman Post of the American Legion, as Legion district commander, and as Chef de Gare of the Forty and Eight. He was a long time member of the Elks Lodge. Renowned as a public speaker, Maurice presented dramatic readings; one of his poetic favorites was

Dawn on the Coast of Ireland by John Locke. Arnold Daly remembers Maurice doing a poetry reading in a packed NCHS Auditorium. He was a fluent speaker of the Gaelic language and one of his most cherished personal treasures was his Irish prayer book which he used for night prayers and special devotions.

By the way, the Irish for Kelliher is Ceileachar.

Maurice Kelliher . . .

Maurice died March 1, 1956.

There were four daughters born to Maurice and Mary, all educated in St. Anthony parochial school and Natrona County High School: Rita Rochelle, Rosaleen Webster, Mary Kelliher BVM, and Patricia Tripeny.

Could be #259.

A comment about E.I. records: In the text manifest, Bantry was transcribed as Bastri. E.I. volunteers are probably sincere and dedicated, but they do make mistakes that can't be attributed to lack of quality in the original manifest. In addition, I looked for the E.I. original manuscript for some of the people who arrived with Michael on Campania. I found, instead, the manifest for Pallanza which arrived about the same time, but carrying mostly continentals.
