Updated 3-25-2005 At the end of this text, just before the table, I will add updates. - - - To The Updates - - - To The Table I wish to thank Margie Ellis for gathering this information from the 1930 Census. It came from a digitized transcription of the microfilmed manuscript census tabulations which are notoriously difficult to read. Mistakes were made inevitably. Margie and I have corrected the most egregious errors. Let's talk briefly about those corrections. Michael Ellis's relation to Head of Household was most certainly not Mother. I started school with, and was drafted with a Greek boy, Zach Panagos. His father (or was it an uncle?) was listed as Irish. I suspected that the transcriber's ruler slipped as he read across the wide census page, but I was wrong. I checked the enumerator's manuscript and saw that he had written Island Crete for birthplace. The transcriber saw Ireland rather than Island. (The father of another Greek classmate was listed as Irish in his naturalization papers. That case and its cause is discussed in Issues. In both cases the word island is mistaken for Ireland; this case is a transcription error while the case in Issues is an auditory error.) That's enough case history, but the problems led me to enter a field called Corrected Name. There, for instance, I entered Sullivan for a man listed as Sallman. For this case we had a copy of the census manuscript. (The manuscript may be 'called up' from the computerized census listings.) I saw the script as Sullivan. I entered a question mark in that field for several names (John Ialez, Peter Ozaha) that just don't sound Irish to me. These may be simple name transcription errors. (Wrong again, Ozaha was from Finland - transcribed as Ireland - and is really Ojala, pronounced O-yalla. The name has been removed.) I've given each name a unique identification number called C30ID. For names that I can relate to names in the original Register, I've provided the identification code called there, and here, ID. In most cases I used date of birth and Family Member (see below) as a clues. In a few cases I stretched the clues a bit. To state the obvious: Those without ID may be new to Register. My database has an identification field for the Social Security Death Index table as well, but I've not yet related the two tables. A word about date of birth. The census manuscript mentions age, not a date. The transcription process, thus, required a calculation. The formula used: DOB = 1930 - Age. The DOB could be either that date OR the prior year. And we don't know that the calculation was done correctly unless we check the manuscripts. There are many fewer Irish in the table than I expected. Margie used AncestryPlus.com. I searched for Natrona County Irish at Ancestry.com. It is clear that the data source is the same in both cases (e.g., the same mistakes, the same count), but Ancestry.com provides an additional field, Family Member. I believe that, most often, this field lists the wife, but there is at least one exception (Eugene McCarthy), an unforgivable error (See below.). This additional field helps explain how the names of wives come to be missing from the transcribed records though they are in the manuscript records. In some of the census records the field is called Spouse. I printed out a few more pages of towns and election districts outside of Casper. The search produced 162 names, excluding Family Member. We removed Easson (born in Rhode Island - Ireland for Island again), Panagos, and Ozaha for cause. There are then 159 plus wives minus non-Irish wives in the list. Relation to HH expands to Relation to Head of Household. It disturbed me that a nun was listed there as Sister and a priest as Father. I added a field called Title, and changed the RtHH field appropriately. My printed copy (as opposed to Margie's) shows only the beginning of this field, so I guessed for a few relationships. The data is sorted as I found it, the order preserved because it has a geographic basis. Casper is shown most often under City, but there are a few other entries in that field (Mills, Salt Creek, etc). The abbreviation ED 13 is short for Election District 13. The task of transcribing the census manuscripts was monumental. I thank and applaud the workers, but they were far from careful. Some records are impossible to read, but egregious errors were made on perfectly clear records. Other Censuses 1880 Statewide Wyoming is not yet a state. John Pierce, Green River, born about 1829 Charles O'Donnell, Sweetwater River, born about 1844 1890 Census is labeled as a fragment - no Wyoming entries 1900 Statewide 1602 Irish entries, including Kills Austher Time the manuscript: 'Oklahoma; Indian' 1900 Natrona 54 Irish entries (I have a printed copy.) 1910 No origin information 1920 Natrona 106 Irish entries (I have a printed copy.) 1920 Statewide 647 Irish entries 1930 Statewide I have a printed copy, but no count. There are many, including soldiers at Fort Francis, Laramie. Reasons for providing Updates here rather than in the table itself: * Producing the table from the database is time consuming. * Updates should not be hidden as they would be if placed in the table. * My remarks fit better here than in the table. I learned this new information by examining the manuscripts. I probably will not examine any more. ** Tom and Delia Carragher: -- Tom was 73 in 1930; Delia was 50. -- The eldest two of their 4 children (Patrick 23, Matt 22, Margurite 17, Virginia 11) were born in Ireland. The girls were born in Colorado. ** SR Nazarina immigrated in 1922. ** FR Flave Pixley immigrated in 1926. The name looks like O'Reilly on the manuscript. Father Thomas O'Reilly was an assistant at St. Anthony Church in 1927, and his immigration date in Register is 10-1-1926. This is probably Father O'Reilly. ** Michael Ellis's wife Mary was born in Colorado to Irish parents. ** John Ialez is John Daly. I've fixed that in the table below and in the database. Laura was born in Iowa. ** Eva Delaney was born in New York. ** Katherine Tobin was born in Ireland. ** The Indian lady mentioned above is called, I believe, Kills Another Time. ** Eugene McCarthy's listing showed Earle H. Buswell as a family member. The manuscript lists three McCarthy children, a lady, and only then does it show Mr. Buswell (and he too is a Head). Eugene's three children are Frances E. 23, Justin J. 22, and Mary C. 20. Eugene immigrated in 1890. His birthdate in Register is 5-16-1867 as opposed to his birthyear here, 1866.
