Information in this table comes from a transcription of data from manuscript census enumeration forms. I must praise
the transcribers for their hard work while deploring their carelessness. The manuscripts are difficult,
and sometimes impossible, to read, but for some errors there is no excuse. An example: The transcription for
Michael Ellis reads Mabel Ellis though the manuscript is clear, but even so the gender entry should have told
the transcriber that Mabel is not a man's name. Poor Mike! In another transcription his position in the household is
mother.
I have looked at only a few manuscripts, those that had been badly transcribed. I corrected the errors that I detected, and
report my decisions at the table's end. Please read these comments to see how hard I worked - and for the fun of it.
I have made some minor spelling corrections without remark.
I have occasionally used several fields of the table, Middle Name, Corrected Name, and Maiden Name
for other than their intended purpose to show information that fits no where else.
The index to the 1930 is in enumeration order. The 1900 and 1920 censuses are in alphabetic order, though that order has
been violated a bit when I changed spellings or found additional immigrants in the manuscripts.
Alphabetic order is useful of course, but it is not the order of the manuscript. The household relationship becomes meaningless.
Brother, and more especially, Cousin lose meaning until the records are seen near each other on the manuscript page.
The policy of the transcriber was to record each surname in the household once only. Thus, a husband would be listed, his
wife would not.
A cousin with the same name would not be listed, but a lodger with a different name would.
I have noticed the term Servant was used often to describe a person's position in a household. It's not unlikely that a
woman would be a cook, maid, or nanny, be in fact what we normally mean by the word. But many man were listed as servants, but would
also have an occupation listed in the manuscript. Then in the 1900 Census, I found the Patrick Sullivan (the Senator)
household. The manuscript bagan with him, listed his wife Nano, their daughters, and then many male servants,
enough almost to fill the whole form, whose
occupations were in the sheep business. And these men were not in the household, but out somewhere on the range. The word
should be Employee rather than Servant.
- - - to Error Analysis and Correction
The enumeration forms include useful and interesting information beyond what appears in the table: House Number (no street name),
Occupation, Radio Ownership, and so on. You may download blank PDF copies of the forms.
The transcriptions and manuscript pages are available at
fee-based sites, Ancestry.com and AncestryPlus.com. Some public libraries have subscriptions to these sites.

Error Analysis and Correction
I abbreviate Ancestry.com as A.C.
I've written an email to the parent company of Ancestry.com, offering to share with them ehe error correction that I have done.
There has been no response.
I found two manuscript pages comprised only of boarders. One was on the Salt Creek Road. All worked for oil company (ies?).
Another was the Midwest Hotel. The Oil City manuscript may have been for a boarding house.
I hope to post census forms here. They contain a number of interesting entries that are not recorded here. To name a few:
House Number (no street), House Value, Election District, occupation.
Curious about Casper house numbers, I wrote to Kevin Anderson, Archivist at Casper College.
On 30 Mar 2005 at 10:50, Henry Ward wrote:
Kevin,
My wife and I searched years ago for her grandparent's house in Chicago. We had difficulties because street names and
house numbers had been changed early in the century. Has anything like that happened in Casper? I'd like to
mention it as I write about census records.
Kevin replied:
Yes. I believe the City Council approved some changes to both street names and numbering as early as 1918.
Both the old and the new show up on the 1921 Sanborn Insurance Maps.
Kevin
You can view these maps at Casper College.
The transcriptions exclude occupants of the same name. Wives, brothers, sisters, cousins are excluded.
The manuscripts show age. the transcriptions show Estimated Birth Year.
The birth year calculation used in these descriptions seems to be (they're not always accurate)
Birth year = 1920 - Age - 1
The possible years are this and the subsequent year. The census was taken in January and February, so this is the optimum estimate.
Michael Ward is in the A.C list twice, once from a valid manuscript, once for a 'spoiled' manuscript.
Start of Two Manuscript error.
An area of Casper was enumerated twice, once for Election District 3, once for District 4.
Irish names from each were entered twice, and were garbled separately and differently.
I list first the corrected entry and then the error (sometimes two or more per person):
Laverty, Barney
-- ??, Barney
-- Levertz, Benny
-- Lafferty, ??
Layden, Michael (His wife Mary is on the manuscript.)
-- Laden, Michael
-- Ledger, Mike C
Qualey, Michael (William on another manuscript)
-- Za??len, Micahel (sic)
End of the Two Manuscript error
Laverty, Bernhard (1849 per transcription) (A.C had Lavertz) (It's written Bernhard. The subject doesn't see what the enumerator
has written. It's
probably Bernard.) He is probably the father of Barney Laverty. He lived with two sons born in Ireland:
-- Laverty, William, age 38
-- Laverty, Patrick, age 35
The manuscript search to correct Lerer, Julian to Lever, Julian produced a listing for his wife
-- Eleanor, age 53.
The manuscript search to correct Daily, Tim to Daly, Tim produced a listing for his wife and brother
-- Theresa (Arundel) age 37
-- Jim age 32
The Daly house number was 638.
In the manuscript, the Dalys (and others) were listed as native Irish speakers.
Some may have been, but I don't believe this was true for some that I saw in the manuscript. Theresa, for example, was my
first cousin, once removed. Irish is spoken today as the native language in small areas, and I don't believe it was that
different around 1900.
An isolated transcription error:
Minihan, Patrick
-- Win??, Patrick
For Keohana, T??, I can do no better. He's on the Midwest Hotel manuscript. He worked for an oil company as did many of
his neighbors.
Thinking Moses an un-Irish name I searched the manuscript. It's Thomas. In the search I found
-- Julia Adams (age 43) wife of a non-Irish husband.
On the same (I believe) manuscript, there was
-- Kate ??, wife of an English husband.
-- Murphy, Jeremiah?
Mabel Ellis turned out to be Mike Ellis (age 29). On that same manuscript:
-- Annie F. Dean (age 40) wife of Non-Irish Elmer E. Dean.
-- Tim F. Mahoney (age 26) (son of Denver Tim)
Mike and Tim lived with the Deans, were wool growers, and were single.
Harley, John (age 38) is really Hurley, John. He is at house # 60_, Election District 11, and lives there (as head) with
-- Margaret (age 37), his wife
-- William Ward (age 27) his cousin, my father
L??, John - It looks to me like L..enna. He is a roomer a house #1031, and works at a refinery. Could it be McKenna?
Michael McKenna is listed.
A roomer at the same house is John McGabe whom I see as McG...
The Patrick Regan (age 33) manuscript shows his wife
-- Regan, Bridget (age 33)
M??stay, John is on the same manuscript as Peter O'Malley, Patrick Regan, and John McCarthy. Is he John McCarthy?
Denver, ?? is not Denver. The first name is clearly Honora.
I saw several manuscript pages that contain only lodgers. One such was the Midwest Hotel. The Henning Hotel was formerly
the Midwest.
