Information in this table comes from a transcription of data from manuscript census enumeration forms. I must praise
the transcribers for their hard work while deploring their carelessness. The manuscripts are difficult,
and sometimes impossible, to read, but for some errors there is no excuse. An example: The transcription for
Michael Ellis reads Mabel Ellis though the manuscript is clear, but even so the gender entry should have told
the transcriber that Mabel is not a man's name. Poor Mike! In another transcription his position in the household is
mother.
I have looked at only a few manuscripts, those that had been badly transcribed. I corrected the errors that I detected, and
report my decisions at the table's end. Please read these comments to see how hard I worked - and for the fun of it.
I have made some minor spelling corrections without remark.
I have occasionally used several fields of the table, Middle Name, Corrected Name, and Maiden Name
for other than their intended purpose to show information that fits no where else.
The index to the 1930 is in enumeration order. The 1900 and 1920 censuses are in alphabetic order, though that order has
been violated a bit when I changed spellings or found additional immigrants in the manuscripts.
Alphabetic order is useful of course, but it is not the order of the manuscript. The household relationship becomes meaningless.
Brother, and more especially, Cousin lose meaning until the records are seen near each other on the manuscript page.
The policy of the transcriber was to record each surname in the household once only. Thus, a husband would be listed, his
wife would not.
A cousin with the same name would not be listed, but a lodger with a different name would.
I have noticed the term Servant was used often to describe a person's position in a household. It's not unlikely that a
woman would be a cook, maid, or nanny, be in fact what we normally mean by the word. But many man were listed as servants, but would
also have an occupation listed in the manuscript. Then in the 1900 Census, I found the Patrick Sullivan (the Senator)
household. The manuscript bagan with him, listed his wife Nano, their daughters, and then many male servants,
enough almost to fill the whole form, whose
occupations were in the sheep business. And these men were not in the household, but out somewhere on the range. The word
should be Employee rather than Servant.

The enumeration forms include useful and interesting information beyond what appears in the table: House Number (no street name),
Occupation, Radio Ownership, and so on. You may download blank PDF copies of the forms.
The transcriptions and manuscript pages are available at
fee-based sites, Ancestry.com and AncestryPlus.com. Some public libraries have subscriptions to these sites.
